The 1;29 balanced chromosome translocation is recognised to be the most common chromosome aberration in cattle causing reduced fertility. The t(1;29) abnormality can be identified or excluded by conventional chromosome analysis, which is used widely as a screening test.


FISH analysis offers the advantage of identifying the translocation in interphase nuclei and suboptimal chromosome preparations. It provides a rapid and unequivocal diagnosis.
