Isopropyl-ß-D-thiogalactoside. IPTG is an inducer of ß-galactosidase activity in many bacteria. It is a lac analogue which binds and inhibits the lacI repressor that serves to induce ß-galactosidase activity in a colourimetric assay. This assay is used to differentiate recombinants from non-recombinants in cloning experiments using vectors containing the lacZ α-peptide gene.
