The icosahedral bacteriophage øX174 has a 5,386bp genome which exists in two forms, a single-stranded infectious form when packed in the phage head, and a double-standard replicative form when in the cell.
Restriction enzyme-digested øX174 DNA is commonly used to generate size markers for gel analysis of nucleic acids.
