5-Bromo-4-Chloro-3-Indolyl-ß-D-Galactoside. X-gal in conjunction with IPTG is used to detect ß-galactosidase activity in a colourimetric assay. This assay is used to differentiate recombinants from non-recombinants in cloning experiments using vectors containing the lacZ α-peptide gene.
